To help customers buying their first e-bike, and some experienced users we briefly introduce some key things to consider when buying an e-bike.
We want to help you buy the e-bike that meets your needs, we do not want to try and sell you an e-bike that is a compromise. If we don't have a suitable e-bike we will point you in the direction of who may have. The more e-bike riders there are, the better for e-bike business and the environment.
you have a wide choice of e-bike models and sellers to choose from: not all e-bikes are equal QUALITY, SAFETY, After Sales support are factors which should be considered along with price.
THINGS TO CHECK:
What are the legal requirements of an e-bike where you want to use it. check out https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules
After sales Service not all sellers have a network of service stations. That is not a problem if the product is good quality and parts are easily obtained. Minster-ev products use branded and generic components and avoids special bespoke items in the build. This both keeps costs low and items are available from many sources. this is important when the warranty period expires.
Warranty: Minster-ev bike frames are covered by a lifetime warranty and the electrics for 12 months against manufacturing defects. it doesn't cover rider negligence.
some important points to remember.
you are responsible for your safety,
ride sensibly, and safely
ignorance of the law is not a defense in court,
At least have some idea of the law relating to e-bikes. Telling the police you didn't know you were doing wrong will not stop you getting a ticket.
In particular electric bikes with motors larger than 250Watts are NOT EPACS. consequently you will be required to get your bike registered and plated as a moped. You will need to have insurance and conform to rules relating to riding mopeds.
Minster-ev is not responsible for your decisions.
If you decide to not follow the rules then you have made that decision and need to accept any consequences.
it is not illegal to sell over powered e-bikes with throttles. (MeV will not accept responsibility for your decision making)
But it is illegal to ride non compliant e-bikes on UK roads, and it is misrepresentation to offer for sale bikes that do not comply with the UK e-bike rules whilst claiming they do. Hence Minster-ev Ltd confirm only the chopster 250R models complyto the UK rules, the other models do not, even though all are CE certified.
The purchaser or rider makes the decision to buy the bike or not, and where to ride or not ride.
it is not illegal to sell a car that can drive 150mph, it is driving at 150mph that is illegal.
Chopsters with motors larger than 250Watts are sold only on the basis that the customer is fully aware of their responsibilities and are responsible for their own actions.
from a safety and engineering perspective, If you want to ride a high powered e-bike make sure it is not just a big motor tied on to a weak frame. You alone are making the decision to buy, if the bike frame looks like like it isn't suitable for the motor then assume it isn't. Ideally buy something which has a good reputation. I recommend that you purchase e-bikes that are manufactured by a competent company and are certified to CE or an equivalent standard. Chopster components are sourced from CE certified suppliers, and the assembly process includes thorough road testing before release to the customer.
